Wacky Rig

The irresistible flutter fall that bass can't ignore

Last Updated: June 2026

What Is It?

The Wacky Rig hooks a stick bait through its center so both ends dangle free and flutter as the bait sinks. This produces an irresistible action that bass find nearly impossible to ignore — the bait shimmies, twitches, and falls naturally with no rod input required. It's one of the deadliest rigs for dock fishing, clear water, and any situation where bass have seen everything else.

When to Use It

SeasonSpring through fall — peak effectiveness during spawn and post-spawn
Best ForLargemouth bass, smallmouth bass
Water ClarityClear to moderately stained
Ideal CoverDocks, laydowns, shade lines, offshore open water, columns near structure
Depth1–15 ft — a slow-falling rig that shines in the upper water column

How to Rig It

  1. Slide an O-ring onto the center of a 5–7 inch stick bait using an O-ring tool (saves bait from tearing).
  2. Insert a wide gap 1/0–2/0 hook through the O-ring — or directly through the bait's midpoint.
  3. For exposed hook: the point faces out — best for open water and clear water presentations.
  4. For weedless: use a wide gap hook with a wire weed guard to pitch into docks and wood.
  5. Optional: push a 1/64–1/32 oz nail weight into one end for casting distance or to fish deeper.
  6. Let the bait fall on a near-slack line and watch for your line to jump — most strikes come on the fall.
