Carolina Rig

Cover water fast and find fish on open structure

Last Updated: June 2026

What Is It?

The Carolina Rig puts a heavy sinker on the main line separated from the hook and bait by a long leader (12–36 inches). The weight drags along the bottom while the bait floats and drifts behind it on a natural tether. It's one of the best rigs for covering large areas of open bottom quickly — perfect for dragging flats, points, and channel ledges to find where fish are holding.

When to Use It

SeasonPost-spawn through fall — excellent for summer ledge fishing
Best ForLargemouth bass, smallmouth bass, spotted bass, stripers

Ideal CoverOpen sand/mud flats, channel ledges, rocky points, transition areas
Depth8–30+ ft where fish are scattered on structure

How to Rig It

  1. Slide a ½–1 oz barrel or bullet sinker onto your main line.
  2. Add a glass or plastic bead below the sinker to protect your knot and add clicking sound.
  3. Tie a swivel to the end of your main line — the bead and sinker sit above it.
  4. Attach 12–24 inches of fluorocarbon leader (15–20 lb) to the other end of the swivel.
  5. Tie a 3/0–4/0 offset EWG hook to the leader.
  6. Thread a finesse worm, lizard, or creature bait Texas-style (weedless) onto the hook.
