Shaky Head

Stand a worm upright and shake it where bass feed

Last Updated: June 2026

What Is It?

The Shaky Head is a round-ball or stand-up jig head with a long finesse worm threaded straight on it. Unlike a Texas Rig that lies on its side, the round ball causes the worm to stand nearly vertical on the bottom, waving and quivering with any rod movement. It's one of the most effective rigs for dragging across hard bottom, rock transitions, and any structure where fish are feeding down and need a subtle, lifelike presentation.

When to Use It

SeasonLate spring through fall — excellent in summer heat
Best ForLargemouth bass, smallmouth bass, spotted bass
Water ClarityClear to slightly stained
Ideal CoverRock piles, gravel, hard bottom points, ledges, channel drops
Depth4–25 ft

How to Rig It

  1. Select a shaky head jig — ⅛ oz for shallow/light wind, 3/16–¼ oz for medium depth, ⅜ oz for deeper or current.
  2. Insert the hook point straight into the nose of a 6–7 inch finesse worm.
  3. Thread the worm straight down the hook shank — keep it perfectly straight or it will spin and twist your line.
  4. For exposed hook: push the hook point through the body and let it rest on the worm surface (skin-hooked).
  5. For weedless: use a hook with a wire keeper and push the point just under the skin.
  6. Fish slow — drag, pause, shake in place. Let the rig do the work.
