Chickamauga is a 36,000-acre Tennessee River impoundment near Dayton, Tennessee, famous for producing giant Florida-strain largemouth. Grass flats, main-river ledges, and abundant shad make it one of the premier trophy bass fisheries in the country.

Spring

Summer
Bass move offshore to main-river ledges and deep grass; ledge fishing with cranks, worms, and swimbaits during current is the primary pattern.

Fish follow shad into creeks and onto flats; chase schooling activity with topwater, swimbaits, and squarebills.
Winter
Fish hold deep on channel structure and around remaining green grass; slow presentations, jigging spoons, and suspending jerkbaits produce.

Best Times of Day

Low-light dawn and dusk are strong year-round, but current from TVA generation is the single biggest trigger — fishing offshore during active generation dramatically improves the ledge bite.

Local Knowledge

  1. Watch TVA generation schedules — bass on the ledges feed hard when water is moving and go dormant when it stops.
  2. Do not leave fish to find fish on the ledges; a good school can be milked with rotating baits.
  3. In winter and early spring, the remaining green hydrilla is a big-fish magnet.
